Fantasy Names · D&D 5e
Tiefling names that mean things like Ash Debt or Raven Oath. Each is built from Infernal words, and the translator decodes it.
Ten tiefling names are already below, each with its English meaning underneath. Press Generate for a fresh ten, copy the one that fits your character, or press Decode in translator to see the Infernal words turned back into English.
Every name is built from Infernal words, so it translates back to English: paste it into the Infernal translator.
Every name is a given name and a clan name separated by a space, and a clan of two words keeps a hyphen inside it. Each part is one word from the Infernal list on this site: the generator picks two English words and writes them in our invented Infernal, so the meaning comes first and the sound follows. The table below shows the pattern.
The Infernal list leans on contracts, debts and embers. Given names come from words such as ash, smoke, raven, wolf, claw, night and secret. Clan names come from the other side of the ledger: oath, vow, debt, price, law, crown, lock and curse. Together they read like a family with a history.
The generated names use no virtue words (those have a section of their own further down), and there is no male or female split, so any name fits any character. For a noble house, switch Name style to the two-word clan and you get three parts.
The words are invented for the table. The D&D rules give Infernal no vocabulary, so there is nothing to look up or get wrong. The same English word always becomes the same Infernal word on this site.
These 50 names came from the generator with a fixed seed, so they are real output and not hand-written. The Generate button above gives you a fresh ten every time.

Besides names built from Infernal words, many tables give a tiefling a plain English word for a quality or a feeling, such as Hope or Dirge. It is a popular habit at the table rather than a rule, and nothing on this page says it is required. Players usually explain it in the story: the character picked a word that says what they want to be, or what they refuse to be, instead of a name from the family they were born into.
The list below is our own. It is plain English, written for this page, and it is meant as a starting point you can add to. Browse it, pick the one that suits your character, or use it to get an idea for a word of your own.
These are English, not Infernal. The generator above does not make them, so the Decode in translator button does not apply to them. If you want a name that does decode, use the generated names and keep a virtue name for what your character goes by in public.
A virtue name can also stand alone as a given name with a clan name from the generator after it. That mixes two kinds of word in one name, so decide at the table which part is the one people use, and keep the space if you want the clan half to translate.
Every name turns back into English. Open the Infernal translator, set From to Infernal and To to Common (English), paste the name and translate. The Decode in translator button under each generated name does the same thing and fills the name in for you.
For example, Zirn Kax reads back as Cruel Horn.
The space matters. It keeps the two words apart so the translator can read each one. A name written as a single glued word would not decode.
Read the two halves as two answers. In this list the given word tends to describe the person (cruel, bitter, hunger, raven) and the clan word tends to name what they carry (debt, oath, price, crown). A tiefling whose name means Bitter Debt owes something and resents it, and you get to decide who holds the debt.
Generate a few batches before you settle. If one half fits and the other does not, keep the half you like, generate again for a partner, and join the two with a space yourself. Every listed word decodes, so the combined name does too.
Say the name out loud before you commit, because you will say it at the table many times. The Given name only style is the quickest way to find a short one that is comfortable to speak.
Treat the meaning as a hook rather than a rule. A tiefling called Ash Debt raises the question the whole table will want answered: whose debt? A few ways to use a name:
No. They are invented for the table from this site's own Infernal word list. The D&D 5e rules give Infernal no vocabulary, so nothing here is copied from a book, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
The space separates the given name from the clan name, and a hyphen joins the two words of a two-word clan, as in Tifuth Zael-Vaex. Either mark keeps the words apart so the translator can read each one back. A name with no separator looks like a single unknown word and will not decode.
Yes. Press Copy link under a name and send it. The link holds the English meaning, and the page turns it back into the same Infernal name every time.
