Fantasy Names · D&D 5e
Dwarf names that mean things like Stone Bridge or Iron Oath. Each is built from Dwarvish words, and the translator decodes it.
Ten dwarf names are already below, each with its English meaning. Press Generate for a fresh ten when you need one in a hurry, and press Decode in translator to see the Dwarvish words turned back into English.
Every name is built from Dwarvish words, so it translates back to English: paste it into the Dwarvish translator.
A dwarf name here is a given name and a clan name, separated by a space. A clan of two words keeps a hyphen inside it. Each part is a single word of this site's Dwarvish word list, so the name always has a meaning in plain English. You can see the pattern in the table below.
The Dwarvish list is full of workshop and mountain words. Given names come from stone, iron, steel, copper, coal, hammer, axe, mine, cave, bear, knot and bread. Clan names favour what a family would carve over a door or hang in a hall: mountain, shield, deep, jewel, wall, bridge, bell, chain, oath and law. Put them together and you get something that sounds earned.
There is no male or female split, so every name works for every dwarf. The longer style gives a given name plus a two-word clan, which is handy for a clan elder.
The words are invented for the table. The D&D rules give Dwarvish no vocabulary, so the list is ours, and the same English word always gives the same Dwarvish word.
These 50 names are real output from the generator with a fixed seed. Hit Generate above for ten new ones as often as you want.

Open the Dwarvish translator, set From to Dwarvish and To to Common (English), paste the name and translate. Or use the Decode in translator button under a generated name and the translator opens with it filled in.
For example, Merd Zinad reads back as Coal Wall.
The space, and the hyphen inside a two-word clan, are what let the translator split the name into words. Glue the parts together and the name will no longer decode.
Decide first what your dwarf makes, mends or guards, then look for a clan word that fits. Bridge, wall, door and chain suggest builders and wardens; hammer, axe and mine suggest smiths and diggers. The given word can then say something about the person, such as Bear, Bread or Knot, so the name holds both a trade and a temperament.
Press Generate until a clan word catches, and keep that half. Because the same English word always gives the same Dwarvish word, you can reuse a clan word across a whole party of relatives and every one of them will carry the identical spelling.
A good dwarf name tells you what the clan does for a living. A few ways to put one to work:
No. They are built from this site's own Dwarvish word list, invented for the table. The D&D 5e rules give Dwarvish no vocabulary, so nothing here comes from a book, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
Each name is a given name and a clan name, and each part is one word from the list. Splitting them with a space lets the translator read both, so you get a meaning such as Stone Bridge back in English.
Yes. The names have no male or female split and no rules attached, so they fit any dwarf. Generate as many as you like, copy the ones you want and keep the clan word to tie a family together.
