Fantasy Names · D&D 5e
Names for tieflings, dragonborn, dwarves and elves. Each one has an English meaning, and the translator decodes it.
Ten names, a mix of all four races, are already below. Pick a race and press Generate for a fresh ten, then read the meaning under each one. Every part of a name is a word from our invented version of that race's language, so the translator can decode it back to English.
More about this race: Tiefling name generator
Every name is built from words of the race's language, so it translates back to English in the matching translator.
Use the picker above for a quick batch. Each race page below adds 50 example names, advice on building a character name from the meanings, and its own questions.
These 20 names are real generator output with a fixed seed, five from each race in turn, so you can compare the sound of the four lists at a glance. Dragonborn names put the clan first; the other three put the given name first. The race pages have 50 examples each.

Every name is a given name and a clan name, separated by a space, as in Tifuth Zael. A clan of two words keeps a hyphen inside it, as in Tifuth Zael-Vaex. Tiefling, dwarf and elf names put the given name first and dragonborn names put the clan first (Name style then reads as clan and given name for dragonborn). Each part is one word from the language that race speaks on this site: Infernal for tieflings, Draconic for dragonborn, Dwarvish for dwarves and Elvish for elves. Pick the shorter style for a given name alone, or the longer one for a clan of two words.
The lists differ on purpose. Tiefling names lean on ash, oaths and debts, dragonborn names on storms and scales, dwarf names on stone, metal and craft, and elf names on moons, rivers and songs. That gives each race a sound of its own even though the method is the same.
There is no male or female split, so any name fits any character. The tiefling page also has a separate list of plain English virtue names, which are not Infernal and do not decode. The words in the generated names are invented for the table. The D&D rules give these languages no word lists, and the same English word always becomes the same word on this site.
Here the meaning comes first. Each part of a name is an English word we picked, written in the race's invented language, so decoding it returns exactly those words. Under each name the generator shows the meaning, and the Decode in translator button opens the translator for that race with the name already filled in.
You can also do it by hand. Open a translator, set From to the race's language and To to Common (English), paste the name and translate. Keep the spaces and hyphens: they let the translator tell the words apart. The pages for Infernal, Draconic, Dwarvish and Elvish all work the same way.
Use a name for a player character, a shopkeeper the party will meet once, or the villain who signs a letter. The meaning gives you something to hang a backstory on, and the two-part form looks right on a prop.
Tiefling, dragonborn, dwarf and elf, each with its own word list drawn from Infernal, Draconic, Dwarvish and Elvish. Each race also has a page of its own with 50 examples.
No. The names are made from this site's own invented word lists. The D&D 5e rules give these languages no vocabulary, so nothing is copied from a book, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
Yes, and that is the point. Every name shows its meaning, and the Decode in translator button opens the matching translator with the name filled in. The translator turns the invented words back into English.
