Elf Name Generator

Elf names that mean things like Moon River or Silver Song. Each is built from Elvish words, and the translator decodes it.

D&D elf names are already below: ten of them, each with its English meaning. Press Generate for a fresh ten, pick the ones that suit your character, and press Decode in translator to see the Elvish words turned back into English.

Every name is built from Elvish words, so it translates back to English: paste it into the Elvish translator.

How these elf names work

Each name is a given name and a clan name, separated by a space. A clan of two words keeps a hyphen inside it. Both are single words from the Elvish word list on this site, so every name has a meaning you can read in plain English.

The Elvish list borrows from sky, water and the seasons. Given names come from moon, star, leaf, river, song, dream, feather, spring, quiet and berry. Clan names favour wider things: forest, garden, field, path, bridge, ancient, wise, stone and night. A pairing reads like a name from a poem rather than a roll on a table.

There is no male or female split, so any name fits any elf. If you want a long, formal name, pick the two-word clan style for a given name with a clan of two words.

The words are invented for the table. The D&D rules give Elvish no word list, so the vocabulary is ours, and one English word always becomes the same Elvish word.

Decode an elf name

Open the Elvish translator, set From to Elvish and To to Common (English), paste the name and translate. The Decode in translator button under each generated name opens the translator with the name filled in.

For example, Wiarn Liel reads back as Sun Spring.

Keep the spaces and hyphens. They let the translator tell the words apart, and a name written as one long word would not decode.

Choosing a name for your elf

Pick the image first: a season, a body of water, a kind of light. Then generate until a given word and a clan word share it or tug against it. Spring Night and Winter Dream are both easy to build a personality around, and the table can see the picture before you explain it.

Most Elvish words on the list are images of sky, water and plants, so a name with stone or bow in it stands out. Look through a batch for the odd one if you want an elf who does not blend in. Copy it, then use Decode in translator to confirm the meaning before it goes on your sheet.

Using an elf name at the table

A character who has lived for centuries can carry a name that means something, and that makes a long story. Some ways to use one:

Questions

Are these elf names from the D&D books?

No. They are made from this site's own Elvish word list, invented for the table. The D&D 5e rules give Elvish no vocabulary, so none of the words come from a book, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

Can I use these names for any kind of elf?

Yes. The generator makes one kind of Elvish name with no subrace rules attached, so it suits any elf you play or run. Pick the parts that suit your character.

How do I read what an elf name means?

Each part of a name is one English word turned into Elvish, and the meaning appears under every name the generator makes. You can also paste any name into the Elvish translator with To set to Common to get the words back.
