Fantasy Names · D&D 5e
Dragonborn names that mean things like Storm Ash or Mountain Hunter, with the clan first. Each is built from Draconic words, and the translator decodes it.
Ten dragonborn names are already below, each with its English meaning. Press Generate for a fresh ten, choose the two-word clan style for a longer family line, and press Decode in translator to see the Draconic words turned back into English.
Every name is built from Draconic words, so it translates back to English: paste it into the Draconic translator.
Each name has a clan name and a given name, separated by a space, with the clan first. A clan of two words keeps a hyphen inside it, so a long name reads like Drazesk-Karm Sovoth. Both parts are single words from the Draconic word list on this site, so every name carries a meaning in plain English, and the generator shows it under the name.
The Draconic list reaches for fire, weather and metal. Given names draw on ash, flame, thunder, scale, claw, wing, hunter, iron, hunger and treasure. Clan names lean toward places and power: storm, mountain, sky, gold, throne, kingdom, realm, army, oath and ocean. A name like that sounds as if it belongs to someone who has a clan to answer to.
This page makes the long form easy. Choose Name style, then the two-word clan, and you get a two-part clan line followed by the given name, which works for a ceremony or a formal introduction. There is no male or female split, so any name fits any character.
The words are invented for the table. The D&D rules give Draconic no word list, so the vocabulary is ours, and one English word always gives the same Draconic word.
On this page a dragonborn name is written clan first and given name last, so Mountain Ash is the clan Mountain and the given name Ash. Many tables write dragonborn names this way, with the family before the person, and it gives these names a different shape from the tiefling, dwarf and elf names on this site, which put the given name first.
The order applies everywhere on the page: the generator, the examples, the meaning shown under each name and the Copy link button. A shared link such as ?n=storm_ash reads in the same order, clan first: an underscore marks the line between the clan and the given name, and a hyphen only joins a two-word clan, as in ?n=crown-island_wolf. If your table prefers the given name first, swap the halves by hand and keep the space between them; the translator reads each word the same way in either order.
The 50 names below are real generator output for a fixed seed, not hand-picked. Press Generate above to draw ten new ones whenever you like.

To read a name, open the Draconic translator, set From to Draconic and To to Common (English), then paste the name and translate. The Decode in translator button under a generated name opens the translator with the name already in the box.
For example, Vrix Suth reads back as Flame Bone.
Keep the spaces and hyphens. They separate the words so each one can be looked up. Without them a name is one long unknown word.
Start with what you want other characters to notice. The clan word comes first and tells them where the family stands, such as mountain, throne or ocean, while the given word that follows, like fury or hunter, sets the first impression. Generate until the two halves point the same way, or deliberately pull apart, such as a Mountain-Wind who never stays put.
Think about how long the name should be before you roll. The full style suits a character sheet, the two-word clan suits the opening scene, and the given name alone is what your party will shout across a battlefield.
Names built from words give you free backstory. A hunter whose clan name means oath has a promise to keep. A few ideas:
No. They come from this site's own Draconic word list, which is invented for the table. The D&D 5e rules give Draconic no vocabulary, so none of the words are copied, and the site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
It adds a second clan word, so a name has three parts: a clan of two words and then the given name. It suits a formal introduction or a long family line. The short and full styles are better for everyday use.
Yes. Paste it into the Draconic translator with From set to Draconic and To set to Common. Each part of the name is a word from the translator, so you get the English meaning back word for word.
